The Creative Mechanics of Location

Joe Haldeman on Roger Zelazny’s writing process:

When I first met him—this was years ago before anybody had computers—he was going through a peripatetic phase: he had four typewriters in different rooms in his house, and he would carry his manuscript from room to room, adding a page or two at one machine, then moving along to another. He felt it refreshed the writing, not just the business of inserting and aligning the paper, but also the slightly different typefaces and margins and the different “lists” of each keyboard.

We are all currently running this natural experiment.
